Mail Changes in QR 1.0.1

Get ready for a few changes with regards to that giant pile of EVEmails you have sitting around in your inbox.

To address performance issues in EVE we are making some changes to the EVE Mail system in Quantum Rise 1.0.1. You will now be able to fetch up to 1000 undeleted EVE Mails, however, EVE Mail number 1001 and beyond will not be fetched, whether it has been read or not. To gain access to those EVE Mails, you must delete newer EVE mails. In addition to this all EVE Mails sent by NPCs that are older than 3 months will be deleted.

For those of you stashing old CONCORD killmails, now is the time to do a bit of housecleaning. That, or hit the forums and voice your opinion on the change.  Click below.

Massive Gamer Magazine: Beginnings

A few blogs back I talked about Massive Gamer Magazine, a newcomer to the MMO media arena. Since then, they’ve been adding a ton of content daily, covering pretty much every bit of MMO news that’s come out.

Today marks the start of a new series of articles on MGM written by myself, the first of which is online now for folks to read.  It’s something that I’ll be doing on a regular basis, and won’t any of the things that I do for the EVE community right now (comic, and podcast) — both of which have fallen behind due to real life commitments, but that shall be rectified very soon.

So check out the site, give the article a read, and feel free to leave comments on the new forum thread started at the site, or here at this blog if you wish.  This is a pretty cool opportunity, and it’s one that I’m really excited about!

EVE: The Empyrean Age Review

EVE: Empyrean AgeIt’s been a long time coming, both this book and my review of it.   I originally received my hardbound copy many weeks ago, but haven’t had time to put a serious effort into finishing it until now.

It’s a first effort for Tony Gonzales, a man who I’ve had the great fortune of meeting at both of the Fanfests I’ve attended, and one of the rare people in the world that I would classify as a friend even after only a handful of meetings. He’s no stranger to the EVE backstory though, and this is entirely evident throughout the novel.

The Empyrean Age might intially seem to be a daunting novel for someone who’s not an EVE player, but I’d like to put it to rest right up front that this is not the case.  It may help to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the game’s story, but any pertinent details are given in the book, enough that even someone with no experience in EVE will be able to follow more than easily.  That’s no small feat, and here it’s executed nicely.

The story follows a lot of characters, but probably most central to the narrative is that of an Amarrian who is salvaged from the wreckage of his ship with no memory of who he is or his past.    That might sound intially cliche, but works to the reader’s service as it also serves as a central point from which we learn details of the universe the story takes place in.

The larger scope of the story involves characters from all four of the factions in the EVE cluster, as their leaders and people try to work towards their own goals and ambitions.  Outside influences are orchestrating events which rapidly spiral out of control, and could lead to all out war between the factions.  It’s pulled off well overall, and ties in extremely well with events from the game leading up to the those in the book, and subsequent fiction that has appeared on the EVE website.

The book is definitely not for kids, with a lot of very adult concepts and events happening in the story.  There’s also a fair share of heavy political intrigue, which provides an excellent balance to the smaller scale events and the larger scale results.  It’s hard not to get caught up in the story, especially as the climax nears and it shifts between all the various facets of the plot.

I only had one real complaint with the story itself.  Myself personally, I like to have an element of surprise to the outcome of things in a book such as this, and while that is largely the case there are several instances where the reader is plainly told how something is going to play out.

It’s almost like one of those moments in movies where the good guys all stand around a table and lay out their plans for the viewer, which essentially unfold as the final half our of the film.  It’s not quite so obvious in The Empyrean Age, but it’s enough to crank the tension down a notch when you know what’s going to happen.

In the end this is a spectacular first effort by Mr. Gonzales, and its accessibility for all readers means that regular sci-fi buffs will find a lot to like here.    No doubt this will be a gateway to the game itself for a lot of people.

It’s earned a spot on my bookshelf, but now it looks all lonely.  I can’t wait for more.

Surprise Summer 2009 Expansion

Bimjo on the EO forums has nicely compiled the major points of a patch coming in summer 2009 that was revealed during Fanfest today.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that pretty much everything in this is a welcome thing.  I’m pretty curious how they’re planning out customization, and hopefully it’s more than just cosmetic.

More details are no doubt forthcoming by CCP, but this is some pretty big news.

Quantum Rise Patch Notes Live

The patch notes for Quantum Rise are finally online, and folks can now see all the details of the upcoming expansion.

There’s a godawful lot of changes coming in this patch, and may of them have huge effects on a lot of players, so I encourage everyone to check them out to see how their experience is going to change. Most notable of these modifications to the game are the changes which rebalance ship speeds, and the addition of the industrial-focused capital ship, the Orca.

Quantum Rise is due to go Live on 11 November 2008.

Massive Gamer Magazine Debuts

MMOs are a tricky beast to cover. The usual gaming media sites are general purpose, and that’s just fine, but those of us who play MMOs know how different they can be from regular games.

Enter a new player in that arena, Massive Gamer Magazine. Brand spanking new, it’s both a website for ongoing MMO news, and a monthly magazine.

It’s not being run by just anyone.  Dana Massey (formerly of MMORPG.com and Warcry) is taking the reins, along with an impressive co-pilot:

I’ll be joined by Sanya Weathers, known to many by her maiden name Thomas. Sanya was the Director of Community Relations for Mythic Entertainment and is known throughout the industry for her wit, sharp tongue and no nonsense attitude.

Things just went live, but coverage is already very active.  Check it out!

Quantum Rise Feature Page

The feature page for the new EVE expansion Quantum Rise is now online, listing all the goodies we can expect from the upcoming expansion.

Certificates, medals, speed changes, UI enhancements (YES), new gates, new music…  whew.

There’s not a LOT more information there than what’s been previously announced, but who knows what’s to come that they’re holding back — what with Fanfest so close at hand.
